Where to begin ? ….. let me think … aah, yes .. Gurgaon, lovingly (I guess) called “Gur-Gawa” (I hope I got it right) – the “Millennium City” of India, which is one of the top ranked cities in India to “work, play and live“.

The most amazing thing about Gurgaon is its “Extreme” nature ! Oh yes, everything here is extreme to the highest possible degree. Summers are burning Hot, Winters would chill your bones dry and Monsoon would simply drown you (thanks to the excellent drainage system, or rather, the lack of it). A short burst of rain can create numerous community swimming pools within the city where you can splash around!

Unlike any other city, adventure is the name of the game here. Traveling, crossing roads, even spending time inside your room, all are equally adventurous. For me, traveling has, by far, been the most adventurous thing. Actually I have to prepare myself mentally a day or two well in advance if I have to commute somewhere. You might think that I’m paranoid, but considering the fact that rolling down the “Great Wall of China” wouldn’t hurt so many bones in your body compared to a short ride on a rickshaw or  an auto here, my concerns are tenable !!! Actually, the Haryana Govt. takes special care to maintain the roads in their “Pristine” (unaltered by human) condition. This is no small feat mind you, considering that on either side of these very same road, a bustling metropolis is spreading its roots.

On the topic of Haryana Govt., well they are, by far, the most “Visionary” in terms of taking action to counter the rapid change in climate that we might be experiencing. They are the original proponents of the “Earth Hour” concept – which the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) have been shamelessly brandishing as their own !

According to them, Earth Hour should be a daily practice and not be restricted to a solitary hour in the whole year. How much energy can you possibly save in just a single hour ? Thus, every citizen of the “Eden of Gurgaon” selflessly observes at least 3-4 Earth Hours every single day (depending on theirs inverter capacity) , thanks to the proactive participation of the State.

No article on Gurgaon can be complete without a mention of the swanky Malls that are the crowning glory of this city. From the oldest (not sure though) “Sahara Mall”  to the humongous and fascinating “Ambience Mall”, all of them act like an oasis for the spendthrift shoppers. Research has proven that swiping their credit/debit cards and splurging on inconsequential objects are the only ways by which a Homo sapiens gurgaonites can revitalize and relax! So for the general welfare of its citizens, the authorities have actually built more Malls than Hospitals.

Gurgaon, which generally remains parched through the major part of the year, finds relief in the numerous watering holes that are present within a “stone’s throw distance” from every house. How this strategic placement was achieved is still shrouded in mystery. And if you are too energetic to just sit around and gulp your drinks down, then you have numerous Discs, where you can let out that Disco-Dancer hidden inside you, in true Mithun Da ishtyle !

Now after all this travelling, shopping, bingeing and dancing around, all one needs is a well-earned rest, in the peace and quite of Home-Sweet-Home. It’s a different matter altogether, that in order to find a “livable” and “affordable” abode you’ll have to devote numerous weekends for their hunt, most probably accompanied by a broker or if you are daring enough, then all by yourself. No matter which hunting path you choose, the outcome will always be the same. You’ll become disoriented shortly after the 4th attempt (reasons might vary from remoteness of the  location, exorbitant rents, cramped rooms, lack of power back-up, etc., etc.) and you’ll settle with the least revolting prospect at hand.

So, folks that’s all I’ve to say about Gurgaon for now… wait, … I think I’ve left out one important thing here – “Food”.  Well, there isn’t much to talk about actually other than Butter Chicken, Shahi Panner, Tandoori Chicken and Rajma.

Well, if I get time, then I would probably add-on to the topic .

Yes, I’m bored enough to write and hence this post.

Let’s start with some updates (well, I’m going to pretend that you are actually reading this post and that you care!).

1. I am still stuck in the same “Shit-Pot with a broken Flush” i.e. Gurgaon/Office. I still couldn’t make up my which one of these two stinks more.

2. The best thing that happened to me on the Professional front was that the food vendor in my office got replaced – and the new vendor apparently serves edible food (till the time this was post was being written).

3. The weather in Gurgaon have turned so magnificent, that every day I get to enjoy a free sauna right in my room, thanks to the power-cuts.

4. Endured one more farcical Appraisals round at office – apparently I’m one of the top performers in my team. This must truly be one of the greatest achievements for me….  considering the fact that there are as many as 10 people slugging it out there (did I happen to mention that of these, 5 are new joinees!).

5. Nothing else worth mentioning is coming to mind now – I believe I had damaged it somehow by being in Gurgaon for far too long! The heat must have melted the frozen crap inside it leading to a septic-circuit. So, this is would be the last point of the very very brief update of my life for the first quarter of 2010.

Hope to pen some more interesting stuff like this in the future. Pray until then!

Summary: The story revolves around a day in the life of “Guter Freund” when he was called for an interview to  a city (situated on the Deccan Plateau) 1,500 Kms from New Delhi and how he manages to go about his business amidst all the chaos that surrounds him on this occasion.

The day did not begin like any other usual day, for on this occasion, Guter had to wake up at 4 am (which on any other occasion would be midnight for him and a time for REM sleep !) for he had to report at the airport by 5.15 am. After completing all the necessary “morning activities”, Guter finally set-off for a Faraway Land ….. A land of Opportunities!

Thus, began the day (rather – The Night).

Although Guter had the foresight to pre-book a cab for the early morning flight, he forgot to get the print outs of the tickets and the documents (like interview call letter, etc.). So, on arriving at the airport, he rushed towards the airline counter ….. luckily he had the SMS, so he received the ticket without any fuss !!! Here, our dear friend tried his luck to get the print outs of the documents ….. but sadly he was given none ! “Sorry Sir, we do not have any USBs to which we can connect a Pen Drive” was the reply. So, dejectedly Guter left the counter and proceeded towards Boarding ( tensed ….. not sure where he will get a print out so early in the morning ….. and what will happen if he fails to get one) .

During the flight, Guter slept peacefully. The first thing that struck him on arriving at Hyderabad was the airport …… truly awesome. The drive from the airport to the destination took more than an hour. During the journey Guter luckily spotted a Cyber Cafe (which was open for business before 9 am …. only God knows why) and managed to get the required print outs ! Finally around 9 am, he reached the office. Here he was photographed and was asked to wait. So, he called up some friends (past colleagues who were currently in the same organization where Guter went for the interview) who had shifted base and went out with them to have a long deserved “Sutta” .

Now began the real challenge …… as soon as he came back, he was called in for the first round. Guter, hungry as he was, was expecting to have something to eat before the ordeal began (“Damn, Interview on an empty Stomach …. no chance in Hell, it’s going to Suck” – he thought) .

The interviewer luckily asked Guter about his Gastronomical demands ( I guess the interviewer saw on Guter‘s face the obvious famished state that he was in) ….. and Guter, given the opportunity to satiate his hunger, immediately grabbed the opportunity. So, the first round almost entirely took place in the canteen over Dosas and Idlis !

When the first round finally ended, Guter was a little apprehensive, because he feared that neither he nor the interviewer understood what the other was trying to imply.

As soon as the first round was over, the second round began ….. with some more psychobabble ! During this Guter felt a bit more comfortable, by now he was getting a hang of it and simply went with the flow.

The second round lasted for about half an hour. As soon as the interviewer left, Guter called up his friends again, it was time for some more smoke, all this rounds of Q&As had left him demanding for more Nicotine! So, off he went to quench his thirst. Guter contemplated his fate with his friends over coffee and Gold Flake and finally decided that it was of no use and would cause needless mental exertion.

It was around 11.30 am. The final round was surprisingly scheduled at 5:30 pm. So Guter had the rest of the day to himself and he had no idea how to spend it. So he did the thing that came to him naturally. He entered an empty cabin and went of to sleep, oblivious of the surrounding he was in.

After an hour or so, he had lunch with his friends (who thankfully woke him up from his slumber). Lunch was followed by some more Sutta 8) .

The impending final round (it was supposed to be a Video Conference – and interacting with a tracking camera and a TV monitor was something new to Guter) did alter Guter‘s state of mind to some extent (although he looked composed ….. no one can be totally stress free at such situations). He wanted to get over with it as quickly as he could. But that was not going to happen. Thus, once again Guter entered an empty cabin (“Thank God, they atleast have a few extra cabins – where would have I slept otherwise ? – ” – Guter wondered) and dozed off once again. And he did not wake up until 5.30 pm !

As soon as he woke, the HR came to the room searching for him and took him to the conference room.

A large empty room with too many chairs, a huge LCD (or may be Plasma – Guter didn’t get enough time to inspect carefully), an auto tracking camera (which kept following his every move) and the AC at full blast overwhelmed Guter. Soon, the Final Hurdle began.  It was grueling, he had to explain every nitty-gritty. Although he got frustrated at times, he held the fort. Finally it was over after an hour or so and Guter took a deep breath.

After completing some formalities, Guter finally stepped out in the open (BTW his friends had already left the building – one them was at the airport as he was leaving for Kanpur) around 6.45 pm. He called up the same cabbie who dropped him off in the morning. The cabbie told him that he would be there in about 15 mins. Guter, finally alleviated of the bottled up stress, started enjoying the evening breeze. 30 mins went by, no cabbie ! So, he called up again, only to hear this –  ” I ham Sarry Sir, Thyre puncture Hho Gaya …. Aap Dooosra cab bula Lo“.

“What ?? Are you serious ? I have a flight to catch you idiot !” Flummoxed, Guter, tried the local Meru Cab service but it kept it on loop for more than 10 minutes ….. “Damn, these Radio Cab services ….. “. It was already  7.15 pm and he had to report to the airport at 8.30 pm. The journey itself would take about an hour depending on favorable traffic conditions.

Panic…..panic….panic. He kept dialing the cab service, and this time he got through. He was literally pleading with the operator to send him a cab as soon as humanly possible. The operator assured him that the cab would arrive within 10 mins. Guter, somewhat relieved but still anxious kept on smoking to ease his nerves (more than missing his flight he was worried about the non-refundable ticket that he was having) . As promised, the cab arrived within 10 mins, and Guter jumped inside. “To the Airport, as fast as you can…. PLEASE!“. The cabbie obliged and within 50 mins, Guter was staring at the same amazing structure that had greeted him in the morning. Relieved, that he won’t miss his flight and lose the money, he strolled inside. Here by chance he met with his friend who was going to Kanpur (his flight had been delayed) and talked about the interview and the harrowing “Cab” experience.

After talking for some time, his friend had to leave, the boarding for the Kanpur flight had begun. So, Guter,was once again all by himself……contemplating the events of the day. Soon, the announcement for the Delhi was on air and Guter proceeded towards the boarding gate. All this while wondering whether he would see this airport soon !

The story forward: Guter slept all the way to Delhi, went home, and wandered off to Dreamland !!!!

Well, readers (I know this was one long and boring post …… written when I was Bored to Infinity myself while in office) that was the story of a day in the life of Guter Freund, and his search for Greener Pastures !!!




Actually nothing much exciting happened in the past month until yesterday!! That’s because yesterday I received a bottle of “Moët & Chandon” from office as a recognition of contribution to a project in which I had absolutely no part to play. My only useful contribution was that of an observer -  yes for more than 2 weeks I was attending these boring meetings and discussions on a daily basis and each of which lasted for around 2 hours. And to replenish all the Energy that drained off my body during those meetings, now I have this sweet & bubbly Champagne sitting nicely in my refrigerator.

Well for the first time in life, attendance paid off !

Things at office have become a bit nocturnal – that’s because, for the past week I had been working late into the night (shifts which extended for more that 11 – 12 hrs) – that’s too much for me, considering the “Peanuts” that I receive at the end of each month.

Out of office, the past month turned out to be a movie marathon of sorts for me. Never in my life had I been to the movie theatre back to back on 3 consecutive weekends. The marathon began with “London Dreams” followed by “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” and ended with “2012″. I’m planning to end this trend with “Kurbaan” this weekend.

Having being sleep deprived for about a week, the weekend also provides me with an opportunity to compensate for it and that will be on top of my priority-list of  “To-Do” things.

That’s all the excitement I had this past month …..

Rather than being happy I felt quite lost, for I had to leave behind my friends and my well accustomed daily life. The thought of impending studies was something scary to me. For I had developed a notion that at such premier Institutes, all the students were like those bespectacled bookworms who knew nothing other than books and studies. Although I am also a “Monocled Gentleman” 8) , but it was completely due to some nocturnal TV shows!

They day I left Calcutta for KGP (Kharagpur), Calcutta experienced heavy torrential showers, I suppose the Heavens cried (or may be they were tears of Joy !). Nonetheless, I managed to leave behind the city of my Birth with a heavy heart, some equally heavy bags and completely sodden clothes !

The first thing that struck me about IIT KGP was its location. Why did Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, select such an isolated and remote location, far from Humanity for setting up such an Institute of National Importance ?? And what in the world made him select the Hijli Detention Camp as the Campus ?? Well, I guess he foresaw the future of the students (in a way, it still is a Detention Camp) !!!

The next few days were spent in toiling over paperwork and getting accustomed to my new environment. I was eager for the classes to start, I wanted to see my new batch mates, esp. the Girls , in a hope that at least now GOD would answer my prayers and bless me with some “Beautiful” AND “Female” batch mates. But, He replaced the “And” with “Or” and made “Beautiful” and “Female” mutually exclusive . And to show His love for me, He blessed our class of 20 with a Gender ratio of 1:1 with the above condition(s). Hope you get the picture !!! (If not, Then see below)

Now I faced the real test, forget studies, nothing in the world could keep me awake in class after the first 15 minutes no matter how hard I tried to stay awake. And for this each and every Prof. was totally disgruntled with me ! I usually sat and slept in the back rows, a habit developed in school, So the Profs shifted me to the front row to stop me from falling asleep, no success there also, I kept sleeping right in the front row ! So they gave up bothering about me (and my sleep) and paid more attention to teaching the rest of the class.

Like Tata Indicom, I have excellent communication skills, and as a result within a month or two, I successfully got “disconnected” from the majority of the class !

The majority of the class composed of students from 2 rival colleges (atleast in the field of Geology) from Calcutta. One faction always tried to impose the President’s Rule (Guess the College) while the other (into which i fell) opposed them vehemently. But there were some Mir Jafars in our faction (Names, again not mentioned on purpose to save their dignity!). This strife continued for 2 years and it was only during the last few months that a cease fire was called.

Living in KGP, taught me to respect the computer. Because without it you can never access the vast treasure trove of knowledge i.e. “The DC++” !!!!! It was the store house of all the Movies (all varieties – from B/W to Eastman Color to “The Special Monochrome“), Games, Softwares, and what not…..it even had study materials (not something that I was interested in) ! So, If you are in KGP, and you can’t access DC++, then you are as good as a Fish in a Frying Pan (Dead).

I got accustomed to my new life at KGP rather quickly than I had anticipated. My daily routine included waking up in the morning (without completing my sleep), attend the lectures, complete my sleep during the lectures (thereby embarrassing others who sat next to me and also the Prof.), come back to Hostel, have lunch, go attend some more lectures (and in the process, complete the ” Afternoon Siesta”, this is an absolute necessity of a true Bangali !!!), come back to Hostel and finally Wake Up to Life & Freedom !! This routine was regularly interrupted by numerous trips to the Nescafe, Tikka and Cheddis for a quick cup of Tea/Coffee and Smoke ! And for 2 years I followed this drill religiously !!

Sunday morning began in a very unusual way , I got up at @7.30 in the morning!! Usually on weekends i sleep until 11. I had to go to NDLS to recieve him, got soaked in the rain, which eluded Gurgaon for the whole week but had to occur on the very day on which i needed to step out of my Heaven !!! Together  went to ISBT to book his ticket to Dehradun, Broke my specs worth 4K 8) while boarding the damn Harayna Roadways (Crappy) Buses   and returned home with a bagful of Beer, and all this time i was partially BLIND!!!

The very first thing on reaching home was to “undress” those nice, cool bottles……. yeah…Cheers or as we say in Bengali……” Ullass” !!! In the evening we called up another friend of ours, who also lives in Gurgaon…….and had a Mini College Reunion of sorts…………and once again the theme of the party was to get drowned in beer!!!! BTW, this friends of ours also brought some beer with him when he came to my place……..”Ullass” once again!

Later on as night approached, we were getting bored, drinking in confined spaces has its downsides…..so…..off we go to a bar……. man this was a big occasion…. we needed proper celebration with Booze and Chicken !!!

Three very old friends (hic hic…..all drunk) make some very good, juicy and interesting conversation !!!

The next morning (on Monday), also began with a blast. After we got up, the very first thing we did was to open some more Beer……. forget breakfast, forget brushing, forget sitting on the “King’s Throne” and contemplating the day ahead……what instantly came to our mind was……”Lets have a Drink” !!!!

After completely satiating with Booze we decided to go on a nice sight seeing trip of Delhi….. we visited some of those lovely old monuments which have been nicely decorated over the years with numerous declarations/proclamations of love and signed by numerous of our fellow countrymen who mistook the monument walls for “Visitor’s Guest-book” .

In the evening we took our lunch and then went to India Gate to enjoy a nice evening. Soon after it was time to say goodbye and we proceeded towards ISBT, but the stupid cab driver, incidentally didn’t knew where ISBT was and we found ourselves lost in the streets of Delhi! After some asking around we finally managed to reach there.

After that I came back straight to the “Hell Hole” called Gurgaon…….entered my “Heaven” and started writing this crappy post !

Their stupid policies, code of conducts and numerous other so called “Employee Recognition and Awards” policies have made it mandatory to adopt such an attitude. Someone might well be “fired” for simply writing about such a thing in their blog. I guess, that would really be a Blessing in disguise for the person concerned.

It has been the motto of Company “X” that if they are cornered regarding any of their policies which tend to be beneficial to the employee, they change the policy overnight without having the courage or dignity of notifying anyone.

Any organization which does not value it’s employees should not expect the employees to show an iota of respect or passion towards the company.

Well, I can go on and on about such a company……may be in one of my future post I will bring forth a truly fictionalized account.

So without wasting any time my friends and I decided to visit Nainital (the “Paradise City”). The journey began on the wee hours of 14th. Although sleepy but the forthcoming excitement kept us all awake. This in turn turned out to be blessing in disguise……our driver soon lost his way. After successfully relocating ourselves (with some help from Google Maps) we finally reached Nainital in the afternoon.

The first thing that we did on arrival was “Boating” @ “Naini Tal”.

The serene beauty and the excellent weather soon captivated us and the tiredness of the long road trip soon vanished amidst the misty mountains !!!

After enjoying ourselves to the fullest we set out on our hunt to find a place to stay for the night. This proved to be the most disastrous part of our unplanned trip. Apparently all of humanity had come to Nainital during the same weekend……and the place was chock-a-block with tourist. After banging on each and every hotels, lodges and guest houses we finally managed to find a place to rest.

In the meantime, some interesting events took place. The car we were traveling in got stalled…..apparently, its “clutch plate” couldn’t handle the mountainous terrain, and it started billowing out smoke , also one of our friends had to return back to Gurgaon.

The following day greeted us with incessant drizzle…. . The drizzle and the mist that shrouded us, truly made us feel as if we were up in the clouds. All in all, this was one hell (rather “Paradise”) of a trip.
